An electric vehicle, or EV, is a vehicle that runs primarily or entirely on electricity stored in batteries. It uses electric motors to drive the wheels, rather than internal combustion engines that burn fossil fuels like gasoline or diesel.

EVs use electricity stored in batteries to power an electric motor, which turns the wheels. When you plug an EV into a charging station, electricity flows into the battery, storing energy. When you drive, the battery releases energy to power the electric motor, propelling the vehicle forward.

There are three main types of electric vehicles: Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). BEVs run entirely on electricity, PHEVs have both electric batteries and a gasoline engine, and HEVs primarily use the gasoline engine with some electric assistance.

Some benefits of driving an EV include lower emissions, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, potential cost savings on fuel and maintenance, quieter operation, and often smoother acceleration.

Charging time varies depending on the battery size and the charging method used. Level 1 charging (using a standard household outlet) can take several hours, while Level 2 charging stations can charge an EV in a few hours. DC fast charging stations can provide a significant charge in as little as 30 minutes.

Charging options include Level 1 charging (120-volt outlet), Level 2 charging (240-volt outlet or charging station), and DC fast charging (high-powered charging stations).

The range varies depending on the EV model and battery size. Some EVs have ranges of over 300 miles on a single charge, while others may have shorter ranges.

 

AC Charging – AC power is put into the vehicle from a charging station, and then the converter inside the vehicle converts it to DC power.

DC Charging – the charging station, with a built-in converter, converts AC to DC, and then the vehicle receives DC power directly from the charger, allowing for faster charging.  DC Charging is often referred to as Level 3 Charging

Charging costs for EVs are typically lower than fuelling costs for traditional vehicles, especially if you charge at off-peak times or use public charging stations with lower rates.

The lifespan of an EV battery varies depending on factors such as usage, temperature, and battery chemistry. Generally, EV batteries are designed to last for several years, with most manufacturers offering warranties ranging from 8 to 10 years or more.

 

Some limitations of driving an EV include range anxiety (fear of running out of charge), longer charging times compared to refuelling a traditional vehicle, and limited availability of charging infrastructure in some areas. Additionally, towing capacity and load-carrying capabilities may be lower in some EV models compared to traditional vehicles.

The availability of charging stations varies by location, but the number of charging stations is rapidly increasing as demand for EVs grows. Many governments, utilities, and private companies are investing in expanding charging infrastructure to support the transition to electric transportation.

Yes, you can install a home charging station for your EV. Level 2 charging stations are commonly installed at home, and many electricians are experienced in installing them.

Maintenance for EVs is typically simpler and less frequent than for traditional vehicles because they have fewer moving parts and don’t require oil changes or as much cooling system maintenance. However, routine maintenance such as tyre rotations, brake inspections, and battery checks are still necessary.

 

The cost of owning an EV can vary depending on factors such as purchase price, incentives, fuel/charging costs, and maintenance expenses. In general, EVs may have higher upfront costs but lower operating costs over time compared to traditional vehicles.

The Ministry of Finance announced a waiver of import duties on electric vehicles for public transportation for eight years, starting in 2024.

Some EVs are capable of towing, but towing capacity varies by model. It’s essential to check the manufacturer’s specifications for towing capacity before towing with an EV.

 

Yes, EVs are often quieter than traditional vehicles because they lack an internal combustion engine and exhaust system. However, they still produce some noise from tyres and wind at higher speeds.

 

EVs typically have similar safety features to traditional vehicles, including airbags, antilock brakes, stability control, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking. Additionally, EVs benefit from their lower centre of gravity, which can enhance stability and handling.
